I built a brand new system for a friend, only his motherboard (asrock z87 pro4) isn't recognising the card (xfx R7870 oc). We tried disabling the onboard gpu, we tried reseating it several times, the six pin powercable is plugged in correctly, we installed the drivers and we set the primary video output to pci-e in the bios. However, the motherboard has a function where you have a picture of the board where you can see what components are plugged in. It reads everything, but it says the the pci-e slot is empty. Wat do?

Solution
is the computer booting and are you using the hdmi output from the graphics card for the monitor? you jsut need to install the latest amd drivers then.
did you plug in both 6 pin power connectors? i also have a 7870 and it needs both 6pin pcie to work.

i would also run the motherboard on its integrated graphics if its still not working and update the bios, its a fairly new board and it could be a compatibility problem.

There's only one 6-pin connector, there is another connector next to it, but that one is used for crossfire.

There's one 6-pin connector and one 8-pin connector.

There's two six-pin connectors and each one has an additional 2-pin connector as wel. We managed to hook up two six-pin connectors with a 2-pin connector in the middle. Should that do the trick?

Ok, so now the motherboard is at least detecting the gpu and we have a hdmi-monitor hooked up, but it's still not showing up in device manager.
