Hello,

I've had a prebuilt system for around 5/6 years, its running an AMD Phenom ii x3 720.

For the last year or so, it has had an odd overheating issue, basically until the machine is booted into windows and stable for 10 minutes the CPU seems to increase at a rate of about 1c every 3/4 seconds until it hits 101c and shuts down, if however I manage to get into windows and stay there for several minutes it levels off at around 50c

I have literally in the past booted into bios and watched the temp rise till it shuts off then wait two or so hours turn it back on and it goes into windows fine. Tis has left me having to leave the pc on as much as possible or use sleep when I need quiet time.

Does anyone have any ideas? As it has happened twice so far this week and is rather inconvenient

Thanks

Is your cpu fan messed? I think maybe time to replace heat sink and fan?

Open your computer, check your heat sink and look for DUST. Also, take away your CPU cooler way from the motherboard and try to replace thermal paste. Restart your computer and look for temps, if that continues get another CPU cooler...

It's a Coolit eco ALC how would I determine if there is an issue with that? It's about 3yr old that part

I think I would take the cpu cooler off the board, give it a good clean.
Blow any thick dust out that may of collected just under the cooling fan of the cpu cooler it should come off with four screws or some clips.

Take any old thermal paste off the underside of the cooler, and off the cpu IHS.
Then apply new paste in a thin even layer all the way across the Ihs.
Clamp it back down making sure it is firmly seated.

This is my next plan of action, why would it be only an issue on boot though?

Make sure after cleaning that the fan spins fine. I find dust gets into the bearings and kills fans.

How's your pump doing?

The pump if it is five or six years old would be suspect.
If you can empty, or re fill the loop, and you have not done it for some time then i would give it a go.

Just leFt it 25 mins, booted into dummy windows account with Just core temp as startup and boom 19c... I honestly don't understand how it can happen

Have you checked the CPU cooler fan? I'll bet that on the times where the CPU hits the thermal shutdown, the fan isn't spinning. (edit. Sorry, when I posted, it didn't show all the prior responses)

indeed, it's the fact that some boots are 100c shutdown some are 20c not an issue
