PCI Express x16 1.0 v/s PCI Express 2.0 x16

I have an MSI K8N SLI MB which says that the PCI-E slot supports PCI Express x16 version 1.0 and I need to purchase a new video card, can anyone tell me if a PCI Express 2.0 x16 or PCI Express 3.0 x16 will work? Are they just upgrades or have different functions?

It will work. The 2.0, and 3.0 will have a faster bus, and would support faster data bandwidth, but the cards and slots are all compatible with each other.
