I own an Asus laptop, its usb ports are damaged (none of them are working)
I came up with a plan to make it work. Use a HDMI cable-> connect it to a USB-HDMI convertor_> connect the Male USB to a female-female USB. Connect USB device to the remaining female port to use usb device.

Will that work, or is there any other better way?

The slot should be accessible from the outside but but it may be that your laptop doesn't have one. They're probably never used by the majority of laptop owners these days, now that laptops come with pretty much everything you could ever want built in, so the manufacturer can save a dollar or two by omitting the hardware.

That won't work. USB-HDMI converters only work one way: from a USB port to a HDMI video sink device.

Your best bet is to buy a CardBus or ExpressCard USB adaptor (depending on which type of slot your laptop has). I've been using one of these for the last 5 years since the USB ports on my laptop were blown by a faulty UPS at work. It's a bit inconvenient but it does the job (I bought a combo USB/1394 adaptor which got me a handy FireWire port too).

Hope this helps,

Hi

Before buying new USB ports (assuming your laptop can take add in cards)

After removing battery & mains power
check the USB ports using a bright light and a magnifying glass

look for bent bits of metal touching each other causing a short

if the short can be fixed using a small jewellers screwdriver or pin it may allow the other USB ports to work again
cover the faulty port with gaffer tape so it is not used again
