I am running Windows 7 32-bit Service Pack 1 on a Lenovo G570 laptop. My DVD RW device, drive letter, and everything else associated with it are non-existent. It used to work just fine, but for some reason that I cannot figure out, it started a couple of months ago to only be recognized by my computer about half the time. That steadily decreased to what it is now, which is not at all. Right before it stopped working, the few times my computer recognized it, it was as a USB device. I have checked the device manager and run all the diagnostics I know of and still can’t find my drive. I have also run the Microsoft Fix It program found at http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us, and even that couldn’t find my drive. I think that the actual hardware is working, because I have tried putting game and music discs in and the drive starts making noise like it’s working and trying to read the disc, but nothing happens on my computer screen. I have no idea what to do at this point. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them. If worse comes to worst, I guess I’ll have to take my computer to the place I bought it from, but if I can avoid that I’d really like to since it’s so expensive. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer!

Have you uninstalled any programs related to the DVD drive such as any Roxio software or DVD burning software? I only ask about Roxio because in the past when I uninstalled Roxio software the drive would disappear. Also if any software that mounts the drive has been uninstalled it could cause the drive to disappear.

I haven't uninstalled anything recently that has to do with DVD burning software, and I didn't have Roxio. I also haven't uninstalled any software that has to do with the drive. Could it be that I could access the software that mounts the drive and fix this problem using that software?
