disk defrag never reaches 100%

I've noticed that whenever I run the disk defrag feature on my computer it never reaches 100% complete. It gets stuck at varying stages each time. Anyone know why a computer would fail to complete defragging? Also, does defragging make much of a difference? I know how it works and what it does but have never seen any evidence of a better running system etc.

Some files are set so that the system can not move them, so if they were fragmented when written it is not possible to undo the fragmentation. As long as the drive is 90%+ defragmented you will be fine. It does help performance because it means your hard drive does not have to seek the next location when reading data if everything is sequential. You probably wouldn't notice this performance increase unless you were coming from a very fragmented disk with very little free space.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Defragmentation can have a big impact on performance if the disk is VERY fragmented. Otherwise you will likely not notice a lot of improvement, or the difference on performance will be minimal. Anyways, it's good to do defrag periodically before it gets very fragmented that's the idea lol.

I have no idea why it doesn't complete, it could be an indication of problems with the disk. I would check event viewer and see if there are any errors related to the disk, especially bad sectors. You could also install better tools for HDD testing, sometimes there's one built in the BIOS. Or your disk manufacturer probably has one for free available from its website.
