So I need a serial port on my computer, but one is not built into the motherboard. I have spare usb slots. My main goal is to be able to go from a usb to a db9 serial, then to a ethernet cable. im hooking up into a console on a router and want to use my laptop. is this possible?

What you're looking for is a USB null modem through an active USB to RS232 converter, followed by a passive adapter to CAT5/CAT5e (not Ethernet, that's a logical standard). There are a lot of solutions out there for USB to serial converters, so take a look around. I would caution you though not to buy one that is cheap. Many use very low quality USB to RS232 converters, there are even some counterfeit ones floating around as well. These rarely work...

I highly recommend buying a converter that uses an interface chip from FTDI. They are the gold standard for interfacing RS232 to USB and have appropriate driver support for all major operating systems.
