Hello,

I've recently built a new system with the i5-4670k, and I've noticed that my temps seem to be a bit on the high side. I'm idling at the 37-41 C range, while the more demanding games I have - Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 - take it to ~60 C. I did run the 5 minute Intel Extreme test, and that reported temperatures fluctuating in the 58-65 range. All of this is on stock clocks, with a 212 Evo and AS5 paste.

I understand that Haswell is supposed to run a bit hot, as well as the fact that this paste is only a few days past application, so is this within normal operating range, or should I be repasting?

Thanks.

What case are you using? Have the wires been properly routed? How is you airflow? How many fans? Are you sure there isn't anything running in the background or a Virus/Malware using your system resources? How did you apply the paste? On idle my 4670k with the 212 is at 23-25 and while on Crysis 2 I'm at 40-47 (my temps are for reference)

Either way, those are normal temps and you shouldn't be worried.

My case is a CM Stormtrooper with its 4 stock fans and properly managed cables. Nothing is running in the background to the best of my knowledge - this is a clean install of Windows, and I shut everything I can down before gaming/stress testing.

As for the paste, I didn't actually apply it myself - I ordered the build from NCIX and opted for their build/test program.

Something I should probably mention is I have turned on Asus' optimized setting in my Sabertooth's BIOS, as well as manually configured my CPU fan to run at certain temps. (My fan should be at 100% when it reaches ~60C, or 55 as reported in AI Suite.) Other than this, everything should be fairly clean and stock.

Those temps are just fine.

I've just realized that the High Performance setting my SSD had come with had set the minimum performance state of the CPU to 100%. Turning this setting down reduces my idle temperatures by a few degrees - I'm now in the ~30 - 38 C range.

EDIT: In addition to this, the Asus "optimal" setting in my BIOS seems to overclock my CPU to 4.2 GHz. So it turns out this was not on stock clocks, and my overclocked CPU had been running at maximum performance this whole time. Right now I'm sitting with a maximum core temp of 34C. I feel dumb.

Thanks to both of you! :p
