I just pulled my 4770k haswell chip out of the box, no paste. I guess it's under the lid? So I don't need to apply any?(I have none). Please let me know, my soon to be pc is in pieces on the table.

More about : thermal paste haswell install

It's on the HSF. Mine had 3 small strips of it.

I seen those, didn't realize. I bought an after market cooler. I'm gonna check it for paste (didn't think of it until now). If its there, can I use that?

Yea the CPU cooler you bought should come with some paste. Use the spread method with a credit card. Dot method works good as well but the point of the paste is to have as little of it as possible in the thinnest layer possible.

You need to apply thermal paste to the outside of the cpu (between cooler and cpu, the thermal paste inside is only to spread heat from the die (CPU itself) to the IHS (integrated heat spreader: the metal square that is what the CPU looks like from the outside. Thermal paste usually only comes pre-applied to the bottom of the stock cooler that comes with the CPU, for an aftermarket one you usually apply it yourself.

What also worked extremely well for me (great temps on an ivy i5: <70 C at full load at 4.4ghz OC) was a pea-ish sized amount then I put my finger in a plastic sandwich bag and just spread it thin and even.

Yea I tried the plastic bag but it kept wanting to rub the paste off.

Unfortunately, my aftermarket HSF would not fit. I have an asus saber tooth z87, and the dust guard/heat valve prevents it from fitting. The stock one barely fits. I just popped on the stock fan with pre applied paste. I guess no over clocking yet. Thanks for all the help.
