I am building a new computer and was unsure about how I should approach the OS. I purchased a Windows 8 Pro Upgrade disk from Newegg brand new on a back to school sale. My understanding was that it would work on my build with my motherboard being brand new right out of the box. I was just told that this was not the case and would greatly appreciate if anyone could give me a definite answer. Will my Windows 8 Pro Upgrade disk work on a fresh mobo right out of the box with no existing OS on it?

Solution
Depends on the mobo and the BIOS on the mobo -- what mobo and CPU...be interested to know who told you that also...they may be thinking you need to already have a previous version of Win already installed

I was told by an IT friend of mine and yes he did think that I had to have a full version of Windows installed already. I have everything still in the box but the mobo I will be installing to is the MSI Z87-G45 Gaming with a i7 4770k CPU.
