Need a better video card?

I'm running a Windows 7 desktop computer and I've got a Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card. My games lag way too much (Sims 3 lags so much it's difficult to play, and Slender lags so much I can't play at all!). I've been checking into different video cards but I really know next to nothing about what makes a good video card or which one would make my gaming experience better. Any suggestions?

I'd say my budget is around or (preferably) less than $300. I looked up my computer model and found out that I've got a 300W AC psu, and I guess I'd be alright with upgrading it if needed. My budget for the actual card might go down, though. The resolution I use is 1440x900, and I'd like to play the games on high settings but as it is I would settle for medium. I looked up the model again (eMachines ET1331G) but I'm finding some people saying it has PCIe slots and others saying it doesn't, so I'm not sure about that.

how old is it?
assuming it does have a PCIe slot, this is the best bang-for-the-buck u can get right now, it will play games at ur resolution at nothing short of high

I'm not entirely sure how old it is because my friend gave it to me when she moved (she couldn't take it with her), but after looking around the tower for a while I found a sticker with a few barcodes that has the date 11/17/2009 so I'm assuming it's 4 years old. My cpu is an AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 235e Processor 2.70 GHz.
