I recently purchased an Intel i7-3770k processor and I'm having trouble getting it to work correctly. Here is a link to the exact processor I purchased: Here

I managed to get the actual physical chip installed with no problems but as soon as I boot up my computer, it play four short beeps, shuts down, reboots and continues doing that. I've tried reseating my RAM and I know that it's not the fan having issues. I also tried updating my motherboard's BIOS but so far that hasn't helped.

My motherboard is a MSI H61M-P21 (MS-7680) (SOCKET 0).

Here's some more info on the motherboard:
Manufacturer MSI
Model H61M-P21 (MS-7680) (SOCKET 0)
Version 3.0
Chipset Vendor Intel
Chipset Model Sandy Bridge
Chipset Revision 09
Southbridge Vendor Intel
Southbridge Model H61
Southbridge Revision B3
System Temperature 31 °C
BIOS
Brand American Megatrends Inc.
Version V17.6
Date 1/13/2012

I have a basic understanding of computer components but when it comes down to it, I'm not all that savvy with the technical details so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Your motherboard is probably a DUD. Just a suggestion, 3770K is better paired with a Z77 Motherboard.

I seem to recall some Sandy based motherboards needed a BIOS update to work with Ivy.

Try researching your motherboard name and model and see if anything comes up with this, just a suspicion.

place your old processor back into the machine, go to the asus webpage for the board and grab the latest bios file then update the bios for the board.

once you have done this then try the 3770k in the machine, but like other have said even with it working it will not work its best with this motherboard.

The 3770k is going to be extremely limited by the H61 chip set. Usually, a H61 needs a BIOS update to get an Ivy Bridge CPU to work. But, if you already tried this, it is possible that it is not compatible.

That motherboard is designed for a Sandy Bridge CPU that is not unlocked for overclocking. Not only that, you will not be getting USB 3.0, SATA III or PCIe 3.0 which the 3770k all supports but that motherboard does not. My suggestion is to buy a better board, like the first reply said, preferably a Z77 so that you can take advantage of everything the 3770k has to offer. That and it will be guaranteed to work.

Alright, I'll look into the Z77's when I get the chance. But I'm curious if there is a temporary fix for this. I did a basic BIOS update recommended by the software for my motherboard. Is there any chance I can find an update that will let me use the i7 until I can afford a new motherboard?

Thanks.

Your best bet is to return your current mobo and get the Z77 one as it works best for that.
