HD7970 Frame drops?

I`ve had my Sapphire HD7970 reference card overclocked and running for about 2 months without a problem until recently i began to experience some weird FPS drops. I was playing Battlefield 3 at a nice, stable framerate (90-150 fps average) but now, when I play the game for 1 minute the FPS go down to 30-40, and then go back to 70-90 again. I got my card overclocked to the max (1125/1575) and the temperatures rarely go above 70 under full load. I tried updating and downgrading drivers, tried to underclock the GPU with no effect. Could it be a faulty GPU? Should I return it? I got an i7 2600 @ stock, 4gb 1333 ram, 650w Fortron 85+ PSU.

Solution
grab msi afterburner and check the gpu utilisation.

you may also want to clean install the driver just to check its not a driver issue.

grab driver fusion and latest beta driver.

uninstall current driver and dont restart.
run driver fusions amd driver cleaner then restart.
install latest driver as custom and only install display and hdmi driver.

see if you still get the drops with this.

Will try Driver Fusion, and the settings are mostly low - textures and mesh quality on ultra, 4x AA, vsync off, 1360x768.
Edit: driver fusion doesnt work cause im using an intel cpu, will try amd driver cleaner

Just did a clean driver install, and checked the GPU usage - 50-86%, average 70% at stock clock speeds. Played the game for 5 minutes, had a single fps drop (the fps went down from ~100 to 45 for about 15 seconds), never had such drops until this week. And how do you overclock a non-k i7 2600? I`ve heard about a turbo mode or something.

im wondering if your overclock damaged the card since reference cards arent really designed with components that are made for it to run overclocked for long periods.

other thing you could do is to try the other pcie 6x power connectors from your psu if you have any and try a different psu if you have one or try a friends.

It could be what mauller said, this PC was running for approx 72 hours when I was downloading stuff about a week ago, even though the GPU was at 0% load I assume it could have damaged something? I`m not so sure it`s a CPU bottleneck, I had heavy bottlenecking a while ago when I had a hd7850+q6600 setup, the FPS went down as I was looking at the center of the map and they went up again when I was looking up to the sky or out of the map. This time it seems irrelevant where on the map I`m located or where I look, the FPS dont change much. Will try the other 6pin connector

but you missed that he said he was getting over 100fps with those settings, now he cant bigmack.

im thinking since its not the driver, its either a 12v rail failing on the psu or the power regulator on the card has become damaged from the overclocking.

I will try the 3Dmark, and its not a constant 100+, its 100 fps average. I notice every time when the FPS go below 60 (60 is my monitors refresh rate), and about my graphics settings - texture quality and mesh quality are the most hardware intensive settings and the most important settings for good visuals, thats why they are the only 2 settings I keep @ ultra. I got shadows on medium and the rest on low. Here`s an old vid about how my HD7970 used to behave http:// notice I had my settings all maxed in that video. Watch from 0:53

Yeah, I did. Still the same problem in games, its even worse in Crysis 2, the game runs at 80-100 FPS but the FPS went down to 10-20 for approx 15 seconds.

i dont suppose you have an alternative psu you could test with the pc or maybe a friends?

also disable nod32 and test a game.
grab ccleaner and run the file cleaner and the registry cleaner multiple times also till it finds no errors.

do you have any other software that runs in the background?

Just ran FurMark for two minutes, everything ran fine. Played some Mirrors Edge, as some shooting started the GPU usage went up to 99-100% and i was getting approx 10 fps. Gonna try reinstalling my pc, see if that helps.
