I just want some fans that are silent (preferably less than $18 a piece). Airflow is great but silence is my top priority. I looked at Sythe fans, but pretty much every site has discontinued them. Any pointers, recommendations, etc. are greatly appreciated!

I do believe you forgot to link any fans. :)

It's alright, I understand that.

Hmm...can you give me some more info on the low-noise adapter (LNA)? Is it some special thing I need to tinker with or do I just plug the fan in, set the speed to 1200 RPM and all is good?

Well, the fans included with my HAF XB are supposed to be 21dB but they seem rather loud...maybe they just make a specific noise my ears don't like, I don't know.

They too lack some D1225C12B3AP-13 which I really want :( But I'll look through the rest of their Scythe fans.

Arctic Cooling F12 PWM fans. Really quiet even at full tilt while still moving a lot of air: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186033

After that, I would recommend Cougar fans. ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007998%20600035590&IsNodeId=1&Description=Cougar&name=120mm&Order=BESTMATCH ) Overall, they are great, with the only issue being that the PWM Circuitry can cause and extra noise - this is easily bypassed though.

Enermax fans have a great value, and perform almost on par with the Cougar fans. ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=50001400%2040000573%20600035590&IsNodeId=1&name=120mm )

Looking into these. Seem nice. 22dBA might be loud to me if 21dBA already is (maybe I recieved shoddy fans, I don't know), but on a lower setting these fans will probably do nicely.

Extra noise? And how is it , bypassed? Thanks! :)

A lot of companies "lie" about their measured fan specifications. One reason that Yate Loon fans were so popular was because their performance was actually really close to what was advertised; Corsair does a pretty good approximation as well. The reason I say "lie" is because, much like Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), how a company can measure that isn't held to a standardization. Two fans rated at 30 Db could very well operate at 30 Db, however, one would operate at 30 Db at 1m, while the other might be at 30cm.

Also, two fans running at 30 Db can definitely sound different. I recently acquired at Corsair SP120 fan, and have been testing it. I'm surprised at how pleasant it sounds, because even though it still is loud, it is in such a way that it is noninvasive, if that makes any sense.

All this said, I'm sure both of these cases are the issue with your stock HAF XB fans: they're probably not actually running at 21 Db, and they probably emit a weird tone that you just can't groove with, even if they still are considered "silent."

As for the Cougar fans' extra noise from the PWM circuitry, it sounds like a higher-pitched whir type of noise. It definitely dominates over the sound of the fan itself. The way you bypass it is by not using the PWM signal; so either plug it into a 3-pin fan header, or use some sort of software (or hardware) that can control fans specifically by voltages alone. Motherboards that have the built-in "Smart Fan" utility I know can do this. Speedfan, a downloadable third-party application, can also do this. Honestly, the bad PWM circuits is a major bummer, and this issue shouldn't even exist... but I don't get any appreciable difference in performance between my Cougar fan and my Corsair SP120 High Performance. Since they are also robust, and can be frequently had for $12-15 dollars, I don't mind recommending them - I am just always sure to include the caveat.

Arctic fans are cheaper still, although it shows in their design, but still perform great. That's why they're at the top of my list. (Although I haven't had the privilege of trying a Noctua fan, I can buy *at least* two Arctic fans for the same cost. :p )

Based on those videos, the Xigmatek XSF-F1252 sound the best (or the 'least' rather? :p ). The F12s seemed to make a sound I did not like, whatever it was, I'm glad I caught that (thanks) before I got them.

Yeah, that little clicking/buzzing noise you hear is from the motor. It's something you'll hear on most fans if you get close enough, and those microphones are really close. Here's another person's videos of the Scythe Glidestream and Gentle Typhoon, where you can hear the same thing as the fan starts up, before the sound is drowned out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qB0orYb8x0E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq_LeeCB63g (the Gentle Typhoon's is definitely not as noticeable, but it is still there.)

EDIT: Tell me how things go with the Xigmatek fans. I've always been tempted to buy one, but nothing stood out enough to justify it.

Yeah, I guess I'll pick up a four-pack from Newegg or Amazon since they're pretty cheap and I'll share my thoughts on them (probably in a blog post that I'll link here or something). Thanks for all the help Calculatron, expl0itfinder, and SR-71 Blackbird.
