I got pretty old rig with Intel E4400 Core2duo clocked at stock 2.00ghz.
mobo: ASUS p5B-MX wifi AP
PSU: Corsair cx430 v2
GPU : Ati radeon R6670 1Gb DDR5
HDD: Seagate 160Gb
memory: 4Gb samsung

However, the cpu is unlocked & bios allows a maximum overclock of 30% ( approx 2.6ghz ).Any suggestions what would be the maximum safe overclock limit for this rig with my current PSU without damaging the cpu? Are there any other parameters i should be checking??:??:

Solution
Keep an eye on temps and vCore voltage (rated to 1.5, but 1.37 is prob more realistic) - should prob be able to hit 2.5 anyway, maybe higher

You mean its ok to use it overclocked at 2.4+ ghz ? actually there is also an option for stepless overclocking . which one should I go for?

Well, i think vcore is probably around 1.35 approx. Should I undervolt it when running at 2.66 ghz? If yes to how much?
secondly, there is this other option to follow manual overclocking with user defined values as per FSB. should I try that or will that harm my cpu?

Thanks Tradesman for ur tips bro :D:D

Overclocking varies from CPU to CPU, I've had instances where I built a number of 'identical' rigs and might have the vCore vary up to 0.16 or more to achieve a stable OC on like rigs - just have to take it slow and monitor temps as mentioned

Now that you mention, I have been using coretemp for monitoring temps throughout , please suggest a versatile benchmark tool to check overclocked cpu stability...something that will push the cpu to the max and verify stability dynamically!

yeah...heard bout that. nevah tried tho. :) willl try now

Also , there are a couple of settings in my BIOS and I'm not really sure what they do. Can you help me tweak them up to get the maximum perf from my particular cpu E4400? The options are as follows. The default are in brackets:
MOBO: P5b-MX wifi AP

CPU Ratio Adjustment [Auto]
C1E Support [Enabled]
Hardware Prefetcher: [Enabled]
Adjacent Cache Line Prefetch: [Enabled]
Max CPUID Value Limit: [Disabled]
CPU TM function: [Enabled]
Execute Disable Bit [Enabled]

CPU Ratio - allows you set the multiplier and as mentioned will prob want to drop the multipllier at least 2-3 when initially raising the FSB up. C1E support disable for OCing, the others can leave alone initially - might want to google them for further reference

Thanks a lott...definitely give it a try and post results :D
