Hi,

the re-install disc for my Windows XP Home PC is SP2 & I plan on learning how to slipstream later but for right now was wondering if I could use the i386 folder from my Windows XP Professional disc with sp3?

Would just copy it onto the hard drive & point the registry towards C:\i386 for sfc /scannow.

i386 for XP Pro obviously has a number of files that do not exist in XP Home but my thinking tells me sfc scannow would just pull only the files it needs & ignore the others.

Am I wrong?

Thank you

p.s. When you download SP3 it does not differentiate between XP Pro & Home. Gives you everything.

Won't work. The SP3 download is just that, a service pack. The i386 directory you get there is not complete and does not fulfill the requirements for SFC. Just slipstream the service pack and be done with it.

OK, how bout this. what if I used the extracted i386 file from the Service Pack 3 download to run sfc scan against.

Since the Windows XP SP3 download contains all files for both XP Home & Pro might that work?

here is a comparison of the XP Home CD vs the XP Pro CD
Many of the files are identical, some are specific for Home & some for Pro.

I prefer having the i386 file on the hard drive anyway, that negates the need of carrying the CD around with you. Which would certainly be inconvenient if you were out of town.
