I want to upgrade my processor

I have a socket am2+ 9100e phenom x4 quad core processor that I would like to upgrade and I am wondering what processors could I use to upgrade ?

What is your MOBO? Do you have the money to upgrade that as well? If so I'd suggest going to a am3+ and a 6300 (or 8350). You will get some life out of the am2+ still, but you'll get more life if you upgrade. Especially if AMD starts moving all the CPUs toward AM3. Plus you could upgrade to Steamy.

If he has a AM2+ motherboard than he can only upgrade to a Phenom II at best.

Honestly you are better off getting a new motherboard, ram and CPU as its getting hard to find Phenom IIs these days.

my motherboard is a 780G and I don't really wanna upgrade the motherboard right now if I don't have to. I am just looking for a higher speed quad core processor. I was thinking around a 3.0 or close to it if possible. Just wasn't sure if I could put a am3 processor into my desktop or not?

With your current Motherboard.. no. I highly doubt it. I suggest upgrading the motherboard. If you have to wait to do that and the CPU then you have to wait, but you won't be able to really do either with out the other and get much out of it.

As for finding one, good luck. As far as newegg is concerned, AM2+ does not exist. So if you were planning on buying a CPU there, you'll have to find a new site. But again, go for the motherboard and the CPU.

That's about the best you can do. But DDR2 is pretty slow and will hold this CPU back quite a bit.

Also check that your motherboard does support it as it is a 125W CPU and not all 780G chipset mobos do.

am I able to use a phenom 2 x4 though cause I have a buddy that has one for me but he wasn't sure either if I was able to upgrade to it or not.

That's AM3, make sure your mobo will let you use AM3 as well as AM2+

I can google. Strange that I ended up on Toms again. But assuming that is the board that you have, you CANNOT upgrade to the Phenom II
