Need help badly i have a ide hard drive out of an old computer that i was using as a second drive to store music files it started not showing up so i would restart then it would come back it happened a couple of more times then i noticed a whining sound coming from it so i unplugged it then i connected it back and then it stops the computer from turning on the power supply won't come on until you unplug the second hard drive i just cant lose the music files i have stored on there i think it has something to do with the power connection inside the drive and data recovery can be very expensive i want to get it on so i can back it up any help on how to solve this problem is greatly appreciated.

Get a USB dock. Connect this dying drive only AFTER the PC boots. See what happens.
Second, you could try the freezer trick. In a tightly sealed bag in the freezer for a few minutes. That may give it enough life to retrieve your files.

Sounds like the drive is physically dying. It happens.

Thanks USAFret will try and see what happens.....

I doubt it's just the power connector. Although I have heard drives make a bad sound before when they don't get enough power and even click.

Try a different power lead on the power supply as well as an external case.

Another thing that may work is replacing the board on the drive, but you need to find an exact match, not just one that's close. If your drive board is 546.78 version C do not try to use it with 546.79 version C or something.

Your biggest mistake was to keep messing with the drive when it started to act up, that is never good for keeping your data safe. Drive starts to act funny, immediately make a backup of the files, then you can play around with it, and if it fails, just replace it. That is probalby the top two mistake people make whith their data, no backups and not taking action soon enough and waiting till the drive is totally dead.
