Cooling fan noise

I have two HP Workstations XW8200, one is a single processor and the other dual processor. The one w/dual processors makes a loud noise coming from the cooling fan. I can unplug the fan the noise goes away. I then put the cooling fan from the one that has a single processor (which is very quite) into the dual processor PC and the noise is still there. I guess my question is does a dual processor need a different fan to make it run quietly also.

Thanks

Main cooling fan, not heat sink

Alright. How is it connected? 3 pin, 4 pin, or molex? If it is molex it will always runs at 100%, if it is 3 pin you set the speed in the bios and it never changes, if it is 4 pin you can set it to ramp up with cpu temp in bios. I have a feeling it's 3 pin and your setting in bios is probably different.

Give me a few to check that, I am by no means a pc tech but are you referring to the number of pins where you plug the fan in? The noise starts as soon as the pc boots up, it doesn't have to warm up at all.

I has four pins where you plug the fan up

Plugs into MBoard, dang I appreciate your patience and help

Ok so it's not molex. I'd still be curious to see if its 3 or 4 pin. Basically, you should see where it's plugged into the mobo, it'll say something like CHA_FAN1, CHA_FAN2, etc. Look up the fan setting for that port in the BIOS and let me know what it says.

Looks like MB: See if this helps http://www.freepims.com/fan/

I can't tell from that picture what port it's in or what type of connector it is. Unplug it and count the pins. There sould be some kind of wording on the boad by the connector. Your BIOS, press del at startup to get into it, will have opions to change fan speeds

I saw nothing in the bios that you mentioned so I guess I'll just get rid of it like it is but I sure do appreciate your help. Is there a different (advanced) kind of fan that would make it quieter?

Alright if it's 4 pin then it can be controlled by the motherboard based on temperature. If you go to the hardware section of your BIOS you will see options for each fan port. Look for the one that fan is plugged into. It should be on auto right now. If it isn't then change it to that.
