GT 640 or HD 7750 ?

Hi , I joined just to find an answer to my question. I searched other websites for help but to no avail.

Here are some relevant PC specs
MOBO : Asrock B75 PRO3 - M
CPU : i3-3220 ( 3.3 GHz )
Micro ATX case

I don't plan on overclocking or doing any SLI or Crossfire , and my case can fit both , so which should I buy ?

The HD 7750 1GB GDDR5

I did not see that gigabyte card was THAT overclocked(this versions 2 thing). It is a strange card to be honest. I will try to find you something more up to date.

The 7750 you list is rather easy to find a review for on the same site.

The GT 640 doesn't support the PCIe 3.0 but the HD 7750 does. Does that really matter ?

At this performance level. PCI-e 2.0 vs 3.0 does not matter.

Closest thing on this REV 2 card I can see is this(seems to have the same core clock at least). The lack of 7750 sucks, but it looks like the cards seem to be very close.

Kind of a pain that Nvidia did not just call this a GTX 640 or GT 645. They did something similar with the 8800 GTS(the 512 megabyte version was quite a bit faster than the 640 megabyte one)

How about the fans do they matter ? The HD 7750 has a better fan , but I'm not a hardcore gamer.

As long as the fan keeps the card cool without too much noise(assuming they both last a long time as well). I do not think it matters too much.

It seems no one has reviewed the REV 2 cards. Makes direct comparison not ideal at all.

Here is some 7730 numbers with the 7750 in the chart. Will at least help give you an idea of how the 640 rev 2 compares(if you check out both sites).

Thanks ! I guess I'll go buy the GT 640. It's 90 usd on Amazon . Didnt wanna state it at first just in case someone buys the last one or something. You sure are efficient , I'd reccomend this to my friends.

I added a bit of extra info to my post above.

If the 640 rev 2 is just a bit over the 7730 than the 7750 is still going to be faster. Again if they cost the same.

It looks like the 640 rev 2 is just a bit faster than the 7730(and other times just a bit slower). The 7750 is a good deal faster that the 7730. This makes the 7750 overall a faster card.

As an example
You can see on the Hexus review how bioshock Infinite plays on the 640 Rev 2 vs the 7730.

So in this game at least the 7750 runs about 10fps faster on average.

All results depend on what games you play, but yeah. the 7750 if it is the same price as the 640 rev 2 is a better buy(unless you want a specific Nvidia feature like CUDA/PhysX[i do not recommend Physx on mid end cards anyway as it can hurt overall performance].).

So I guess pure clock speeds , memory and shader performance doesn't always matter ? How about for COD ? Which is better ?

I do not know what is better for that particular game. Overall it does seem the 7750 is the better card in the other games tested on the reviews. I would guess it would be better, but Call Of Duty is not in any of the benchmarks I saw for the 7750

You can not actually compare clock speed or even number of sharers from card to card(because they are different designs, just like you can not always compare clock speeds on cpus.). The 7750 DOES have more memory bandwidth because it has a 128 bit controller vs 64 bit.

*sigh* How come everybody is about new stuff even though older stuff works better and is cheaper? GTX 560 ti or non ti would be alot better than both of above mentioned cards and could be found cheaper. Even a GTX 460 (same as 560 but lower core clock) is better. If you dont like green, AMD has the 6870, which is in the same relevant catagory as GTX 560 ti, but decked in red

It just confuses me why old gpu's aren't mentioned anymore

just get the 7750, its faster. shader speed/clock speed etc only matters if your comparing the exact same gpu and board. when comparing different models, gt640/7730/7750, you need to read a review as they are all built differently, so clock speed/memory speed is going to affect each card differently.
