Hi. i am noob when it comes to networking. Appreciate any help.
I hav to conduct CS 1.6 gaming in our coll. I am planning on doing a 5 on 5 contest. So i need to connect 10 laptops with minimum lag.

One of my friend said i can connect all the laptops to a wireless router. Also that it doesnt need any internet connection?? is it true? what routers would be good for this purpose?

If internet connection is a complusory, the maximum we will hav in our coll is the 3G connections on our mobiles. will i be able to use it??

Someone please answer this ASAP as the date for the competition is nearing

So no one in your group knows anything about networking?

Router -> Cat5 to two x 8 port switches -> cat5 to laptops
You don't want to do this via WiFi.

Unless the game requires it, no internet connection needed. The router gives each PC an IP address.

First of all are you planning to use a laptop with a CS 1.6 dedicated server set up.
Or are you going to use one of the laptops to set a CS 1.6 as a host where you can join the game.

The first option is far better, a dedicated cs 1.6 stand alone server.
Hosting will put a lot of load on the intended laptop used, if using it to play at the same time.

The second point is wi-fi no with ten people using it, it`s going to bog down giving jumps in ping ect.

You are far better using a hub or switch to keep ping and latency down.

Those two statements do not go together. I'm thinking you should hand the setup of this to someone with a little bit of clue.

Cat5 = ethernet cable.

1. no txtspeak, please.

1. Obtain a router
2. Obtain 2 ea 8 port switches
3. Obtain a laptop that will be the game server
4. Configure the game server
5. Obtain several lengths of Cat5 ethernet cables. You'll have to determine the specific length. Get 15 or 20.
6. Obtain an actual room, with enough power outlets, to run all this
7. From the router LAN ports, connect the game server, and the two switches, using 3 of the Cat5 cables
8. From the LAN ports on switches, connect the gamers laptops, using 1 Cat 5 cable for each.
9. Endure much abuse from your friends when it does not work correctly

You can, but the gaming experience will be less than optimal. people bitching about getting killed out because Joe was 3' closer to the router and had better bandwidth...crap like that.

Unless the game server needs it for something, no internet conn necessary.
Although, I can't imagine your participants would deal with no net connection at all...

From your links:
The first is a broken link
The second is cable. Cable is cable...you have to determine how long you need. Longer is better (up to a point). I'd rather have 10 meters too long than 10 cm too short.
The third...switches. Sure. That will work.

Do a trial run with a couple of people first, before you get the whole crowd in there.
