How to wipe hard drive (new computer)

So I'm building a new computer and a friend of mine gave me his old hard drive to use. Is there a way for me to completely wipe it on boot up? Or does it give me an option of a clean install on start up? I am a noob at this stuff.

win7 will give you an option to format when installing.i believe 8 will as well.i just do a custom install [clean install] and it wipes everything.shouldnt be a problem.
