I am running 3.0GHz pentium 4 on a biostar p4m800-7a motherboard with 2x1GB DDR ram sticks and my first try to overclock resulted in have to clear cmos to get working again.

From what I read in a step by step guides I increased the FSB from 200MHz to 205MHz and then system would not boot any further then the splash screen. I think I have missed doing something but dont know what. Can anyone help me?

Cheers...

Solution
If you're at 60C already, then you need a better cooler before you continue.

And it is impossible to tell how much voltage is necessary without trying. Every chip is different.

No, my understanding was that it was the second step after upping the FSB by 5MHz increments until system becomes unstable to find the max MHz.

I don't want to max oc it as i only have stock heat-sink and fan from the original 2.66MHz celeron processor and after replacing it with the pentium 4 3.0Mhz processor and running OCCC the temperature gets to 60-61 degrees as it is.

So basically I am trying very small steps at oc as this is my only system for now and I cannot afford to melt it.

Does upping the voltage by 0.025 cause much heat?

I say 0.025V because that is my understanding from my research.

OK understood, thanks. by the way that was the OCCT monitoring/test program. At idle it runs at 40 degrees which I imagine is high for a stock chip. I have another cooler from the original system that is upright fan and radiator with a single copper loop pipe incorporated in it, the problem is the mounting system is different (metal screws V plastic push pin locks) and adapting would it requires a creative solution.

Is upping the Vcore by 0.025V correct or did I misunderstand that point. My Vcore is running between 1.33V / 1.39V averaging about 1.36V.

I am grateful for your answering my noobish questions and your time is appreciated.:)

Cheers..

Cool, thats fine, thanks for your help. I think I will wait until I get a better CPU cooler before I start upping the voltage.

Thanks for your help.:)
