Lurking viruses in backed-up files?

I have twice previously lost my system drive to viruses so stubborn that they defied removal. Prior to wiping or replacing my hard drive and re-installing my OS and programs, I did a Microsoft backup of my C: drive to external (USB) drives. Is there any danger that if I restore my backup to try to retrieve music/photo/game backup files, etc., that I could re-introduce the virus(s) into my restored system drive, or is that no longer an issue. Thanks for any assistance.

Right, well my suggestion would be to scan those USB drivers OUTSIDE of windows. Kaspersky has a useful USB bootdrive tool to do this.

basically you create a bootdisk with a basic Linux on, then update the virus database, it then scans any files you want. It is a safer but not perfect way of recovering virus invested data.
