The drive "died". Rather than buy a whole new one I'd like to open it up and replace the drive only. Is this possible and if s

Solution

1. You're not really saving any money. A new external is not that much more than just a bare drive.
2. Some of those external cases are notoriously hard to get apart without breaking some little clips
3. It may have died because of the board in the case, not just the drive itself. Putting in a new drive may get that one killed as well.
