Currently have a Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 which has a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot and I'm wishfully hoping that I can put a GTX660TI (PCI-E 3.0) into the mobo without any problems? As I know the 3.0 is backwards compatible but somethings telling me I'm being an idiot.

Best solution

a b V Motherboard
a b U Graphics card

You're not being an idiot PCI-E is backwards compatible, the card just will be limited to PCI-E 2.0 speeds which shouldn't be to noticeable for a mid end card.

I should also say not to second guess yourself unless that guess is something like sticking a fork into an electrical outlet.

Thanks! Haven't tweaked with components for a year and wanted to double check before getting it
