Approximate Purchase Date: September 15, 2013

Budget Range: ~~900.00 USD

System Usage: Games (Firefall, LOL, SWTOR primarily, but I would like to be able to play new games as they come out on solid settings).

Are you buying a monitor: No

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website for Parts: Newegg, but willing to buy from any reputable site

Parts Preferences: What I am pretty certain about so far:

CPU: i5 3570K -- I have read that it is a very good purchase for the price due to overclocking potential and native performance

Storage: Plextor M5 Pre Xtreme 128 GB SSD (already have a 1TB HDD that I will use)-- I would load the OS and a few select games on SSD. Any other games and productivity software would go on the HDD.

Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 660 TI

Overclocking: Yes -- Assuming that someone with no previous experience can safely do it without ruining the CPU in the process.

SLI or Crossfire: No --Unless I am wrong and someone explains why I should do it and I can keep the final cost lower than 1000 USD.

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 on one monitor

Additional Comments: I would like to OC competently and have the cooling needed to support it.

I feel confident about the SSD and CPU, but am utterly overwhelmed when I look at cases, mobos, ram, psu's and cooling options. What fits into what, which voltage rating do I need? Is this one arcanely named component going to be compatible with this other one? Thermal compound, what kind and where to use?

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Playing the above games on a laptop at the lowest settings possible and I don't mind that since I'm at the resolution I like, but I'm willing to build a computer and I'd like to be able to play games and enjoy the graphics available.

Solution
With $900, I would go with something like this.

Wow. Thanks to both of you. Those both look like a great solution.

Will this CPU overclock on either of those MB? Would I need to OC for gaming and if so, would I need additional cooling?

What about the thermal paste? Is that superfluous?

Yup, you can overclock the CPU. The Hyper 212 will handle a moderate overclock. Thermal paste is pre-applied to the cooler so you don't need to buy any unless you remove it at a later date and want to re-attach it.

So, I was considering spending less on my system after talking to some RL folks who said i don't need to spend 900 to get what I want.

This system is up on Newegg for $646.99. Is it good? Will it play games well or will I quickly find myself disappointed? Thanks in advance!
