I didnt overclock it or anything and it says its running at 4.0ghz frequency level. I didnt overclock it is it ok for it to be running this high?

note: when i went in to turn it down it also turned down my ram's frequency also (from 1333 to like 12-ish something i forget) so i just turned it back up to 4.0ghz

What you might want to try is setting the bios to "factory default" or if you want "Optimized Settings " and see if that takes care of the issue. If not and you want to turn the CPU down you can do so and if the ram also goes down then just select the correct ram speed in the memory option drop down.

Is this packaged bought pc? In case part of the package included overclocking, i would make sure first before clearing the bios. If the overclock which it sounds like it has been, may have been done properly, meaning you would lose the settings made.

What kind of cooling is in it? Would kind of indicate if its something quite large it was intended to be overclocked.

If its not overheating, crashing, doing odd things then i would probably leave it. Get in contact with the seller at least and have a please explain.

Returning factory defaults will do as inzone said, will be defaulted to 3.4Ghz with Turbo Boost of 3.8Ghz with also Speedstep regulating cpu speeds depending on usage - will lower/raise clocks when it needs to save on power.

I actually built this setup myself i just don't have any experience with overclocking. I figured out what i did wrong though and corrected it till i can get a new cpu cooler (i.e. a better one). I clicked the overclock genie button in my bios on 1st time booting it up by accident i just had to reset it to stock config.
