So I installed a new SSD into my Lenovo G580, but the OS (Win 8) came as a partition, and there is no physical CD. Therefore I obviously can't install the OS that way.

I then cloned the original drive with the OS on it, (or at least I think I did) to a USB drive and I'm now trying to boot from the USB, but it's not working.

I've gone into BIOS and I've tried both enabling Legacy and UEFI, but neither works, although when I try UEFI it at least gives the Windows Sad Face BSOD. The Legacy just has a never ending under score blinking in the top left corner. I also have USB boot enabled.

Any suggestions?

I transferred OS and APPS (drive c:\) to SSD. I have a Dell precision M4600 with 750 GB drive partitioned to 300GB (OS and Apps) and 350 GB (Data). I installed OCZ Vector 256 GB SSD. I did a Disk Clone... It copied everything from my 300GB HDD to the new SSD. When it’s done I change the bios setting of my notebook to boot on the SSD. After reboot all my program are on the SSD (W7x64 and all applications). No need for reinstallation of any software. Windows7 detected a new hardware and flag for reactivation. I click yes and everything is working faster with SSD.

The entire drive c:\ (300 GB Seagate) was cloned to Vector 256 SSD. Including the bootloader.
Disk Clone works if the source HD is <= to the target HD/SSD.

JUST IN CASE YOU...

Windows uses a hidden partition for booting with the original drive. You are prolly missing this partition.

JUST IN CASE YOU NEED to DO THIS:
Initially it wont work for me since the 2nd partition of the drive contained a lot of data. I had my data partition backup and save. I deleted that partition to make it appear that my source/content will fit on the 256 SSD. After that Disk Clone work.

To protect my data and OS drive c:\.... I made a backup and save it on my usb-drive just in case.

Here's the tools that I use:
Norton Ghost to back-up my HDD.
EaseUS Todo BackUp: http://www.todo-backup.com/?gclid=CJCZmZfPqLkCFSho7AodX...

OCZ provided Acronis Home Backup copy... I did not use it.
