Is it possible to stream media on a different hard drive in my vista pc? ie: one drive purely media and another for normal pc use.

Solution

Exactly why you need to add the media folder to the list of content locations in the Homestream app, It won't know to look on the new drive otherwise.
Here's the Homestream setup guide http://campaign.odw.sony-europe.com/hub/Homestream%20Quick%20Start%20Guide%20v1.1.pdf

page13 discusses adding the locations of your content. You'll want to 'Add Local' then click on 'computer' followed by clicking on the new drive and the Media folder(s) you already setup

I've not put the hd in yet, I wanted to research first. Will I need to get an nas operating system on the drive and does sharing it mean that the network will find it? I presume it's wmp you use for sharing, thanks.

I want to stream to tv, mainly video I'm not too bothered about music and pictures, they're not taking up too much space. I already have the extra drive and as pc was second hand don't have any operating disc.

It's a sony bravia 32 kdl, I'm already streaming from existing 'c drive' using sony's 'homestream', I can also use the tv's usb port provided drive is formatted to fat32. If new drive is 'f' can both c & f stream to tv or does it have to be one or the other?

Both can; the tv wont see the drive just the shared folder name on your computer. In fact this is an easy way to stream many files simultaneously and still retain performance :) I do this myself, separating my wife's soaps and my scifi's. Just remember you are likely to be bottlenecked by your network if you start to many streams.

Thanks popatim, I've doing a bit of googling and realised that 'symbolic links' seem to hold the secret, is this what you meant when you mentioned about sharing a folder? Am I right in thinking that the folders have to share the same name and is it necessary for the original to have no content and just act as a forwarding agent?

I've fitted the drive now and I've tried sharing the folder with no success, the symbolic links are driving me mad, I can't find the correct syntax to enter! Where do I go from here?

You don't need symbolic links.
Just install the drive and create a folder on it such as Media. Copy over you files and then share the folder. Possibly you will need to share with 'Specific Users' and then select 'Everyone' {Its been a long while since I played with Vista} when you go to share the folder.

On your tv when you browse for files to view just navigate to the "//pc_name/ media" folder
That how it works on my tv .

Ok I think I see the problem here. You need to add the new folder to the 'Library' within the homestream app running on the pc.

I assume you are actually streaming to your PS3 or Sony dvd/BR player which is then displaying the picture on your tv because I don't know of a KDL series that has a network jack.

I'm streaming direct to tv via powerline connectors to ethernet connection on tv, homestream itself doesn't hold any content, it takes it from music, pictures and video, I hope this is not making it more complicated!
