My External Hard drive wasn't working. Having used different power cables I tried connecting it directly. I opened up the case un-mounted the drive from the PCB and connect the drive directly using a SATA to USB cable. On connecting to the computer it installed as a Mass Storage device and is supposedly working correctly, but I cannot access it via My Computer. in need to get on the device so I can retrieve all my data that was backed up onto it. in short I have power to it but no access

Mount the drive to an internal sata port and first see if the bios recognizes it then, if it does, see if the OS can see it.

Why do you need to retrieve data that was backed up to it? backup means you have more than 1 copy of it on more than 1 device... so you should still have the original file. Just buy another drive and make another backup.

The problem is that I back up the data to the drive and then 6 months later I got a new laptop and didn't transfer the files to the new laptop as I thought they would be safe evidently I am wrong. I tried connecting via an internal port but the PC powers off/ refuses to turn on with it connected. I have a horrible feeling its had it!
