At the moment I'm running an i7 26k on an asus p8p67 ws revolution and something has started playing up. It's down to the CPU or Motherboard, so I'm looking at what to buy if and when I locate the problem. I have a couple of questions that I can't find any decent answers for. All with a view to a 4yr solution..

Aside from the marketing and tweaks, should I be looking at the core i7 range or xeon? Obviously there are plenty of OC fanboys but crunching out renders a bit faster isn't really worth cooking my cpu, if that's what's happened (not even a heavy oc, but cpu has recently dropped 30flops and i can't figure out why).

Or, should I be forgetting 1155 completely and moving to whatever 2011 socket cpu I can afford after a good motherboard?

Basically do I justify spending a lot now or do I just stick with a cpu and ram upgrade now? If so, what cpu is best for 3dsmax and video editing (adobe & autodesk programs mostly, varies) in the 1155 socket?

Intel Core i7 3770K is the best cpu you can get for an 1155 socket. It's still a very decent CPU. However if you want more power, like a 6 core processor (3930k or better) then yes, you'll have to get a new motherboard and that CPU which will cost much more. But if money isn't an issue, here is a great motherboard that I'm thinking of buying myself: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Motherboard this motherboard is perfect for video rendering, as it can hold lots of ram (64GB @ 2400MHz), and some nice CPUs. A nice CPU that isn't super expensive is the i7 3930k which is a 6 core processor that wouldn't require you to overclock. If you want something even better than that, look into the high end XEON processors, though I wouldn't recommend it. Check...

Thanks! May I ask why you recommend a RoG Board with an Extreme core series over say an Asus WS board with a xeon? I'm curious as to the actual differences, other than OC stuff..

Mostly because it's designed for a PC, and the WS board is more for servers, but some of the features on the RoG board have better architecture as locations of the RAM, CPU and the north bridge. The BUS transfer is less distance which will increase performance, as well as the ram being able to climb higher frequencies. Remember 64bit at 2400MHz is 8bytes * 2400 = 19,200 Megabytes per second transfer speed, which is 19.2GB per second, which are the kind of speeds you want. Also if you run 4 way SLI/Crossfire the PCIe slots keep a steady return as even with 4 slots full, there are still x16/x8/x8/x8 were as most motherboards are x8/x4/x4/x4 which are much slower speeds, almost defeating the purpose of running SLI/CRX. There are many other special features you may find useful also.
