I would like to overclock my CPU because from what I've read online people who have the same CPU as me managed to get it from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz

What are the risks of overclocking? And do I meet the requirements to overclock? Also how would I go about this? I've never overclocked anything before so this pretty much new to me.

Specs:
Windows 8, 64 bit
Gateway DX4870
8GB RAM DDR3
GTX 660 Ti 2GB
Corsair CX500 500W

Is anything else needed in order for someone to fully answer this?

Hi Diamond,

First things first: I would not recommend over clocking with your set up:

1) Your CPU is not unlocked, so you can't raise the multiplier by much.

2) The risks of overclocking aren't much if your doing it properly, but as I said before: Your CPU is not unlocked.

3) What is your CPU cooler?

4) Your Gateway case probably doesn't have good enough airflow for overclocking, can you upload a image of your internals?

Hello

1 & 2. Is there anyway I could unlock it? If so, then would it be okay to overclock?

3. Just the default fan that came with this: http://us.gateway.com/gw/en/US/content/model/DT.GDDAA.012 - I would like to change that though, do you have any suggestions on what I should upgade it to?

4. You're right, it doesn't, but I plan on upgrading the case to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153 - (Or maybe something better?) to increase the airflow.

Here the picture: http://www1.pcmag.com/media/images/319482-open.jpg - This wasn't taken by me, but it looks identicle but mine has a GTX 660 Ti 2GB graphics card and the Corsair CX500 PSU.

Thanks for replying :)

I must point out (because you're asking) the risks of overclocking including voiding your warranty with Intel unless you register for Intel's Performance Tuning Protection Plan. You can read up about it here.

No, there isn't a way to unlock it. (think its hardware locked)

As for an cooler upgrade, I'd recommend something like an Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, however it may not fit in your case. Requires about 160mm of clearance.

Also, the tuning plan does not apply to you, as you have an non K cpu.

As posted above, your best bet would to get a new CPU.

As for airflow, it's pretty bad (same internal as some OEM linus reviewed, no intake), but its alright. If possible, I'd recommend upgrading your case to something else in the future.

you could overclock but as people have mentioned above, your cpu is not unlocked so therefore it cannot be bumped by much, and no there is no way of unlocking it (to my knowledge) i would advise updating to a K model of your cpu if you would like to overclock.
