Hi, didn't know whether to post this in power supply or cpu forum.

This is my current pc - http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Docume...

I wanted to upgrade my processor to this (although it's not listed in the above link as compatible) - http://www.amazon.com/AMD-A8-3870K-Graphics-Quad-Core-P...

I'm just wondering if my current power supply can consistently handle the new processor I want to put in, and if it will even work, despite it not being listed as compatible.

My guess your mb is limited by the power setup on the board. Three phases (bottom of the barrel too) and no cooling. Some sockets are wattage limited also. The cpu may work, but you could run into reliability issues. Worst that could happen is the BIOS would limit your cpu choices and I would not put that past HP. You psu is fine. I say stick to their list.

The HP Pavilion s5-1200z uses exactly the same Pegatron AAHD2-HY (Holly) motherboard that the HP Pavilion p6-2100 uses.

HP lists the AMD A8-3870K (Lynx) (100W), 3.0 GHz as one of the configurable processor options that was available when ordering the HP Pavilion s5-1200z.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Docume...

The HP Pavilion s5-1200z only has a 220 Watt PSU whereas the HP Pavilion p6-2100 has a 300 Watt PSU.

That's really strange, why do you think that is? I'm guess it should be ok then.

The HP Pavilion s5-1200z was released a month after the HP Pavilion p6-2100.

If the BIOS version that the HP Pavilion p6-2100 is using is at least the same or later than the BIOS version that the HP Pavilion s5-1200z is using then you should be absolutely fine.
