GPU Overheating at idle

When i turn my pc on my 6870 slowly increases in temperature and then idles around 90c but when i play games like bf3 the temps drop to around 76c

Why is the idle so high and the load seems fine?

You should download a program such as MSI Afterburner to ensure the fan is running at proper speed.

Also, cleaning the card of dust would be a good idea.

I cleaned the dust and created a fan profile yesterday but at idle it keep reaching high temps until the drivers crash then it drops to around 40c

Maybe the temp sensor is messed up. What else are you reading the temperatures with? Try HWMonitor.

I'm pretty sure the sensor isnt' messed up because i can feel the intense heat on the side of my case

you better scan for malware, there are some bitcoin miners that will use your gpu... the driver crash/recovery could mess them up and stop them from running...

What happens when you run the fan on full all the time? Are you using a reference card?

im using an xfx 6870 1gb it has one fan and when my gpu reaches high temps my fan is at 100% adn i am scanning my pc right now

When in play games the temperature drops from 90c to like 73-78c
