Hello, i currently have a fairly old computer, and i'm looking to upgrade it. My problem is i'm not sure if only certain sections should be upgraded, and if so are their compatibility issues?, my specs are:

windows XP Service Pack 3

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.4GHz

3.25GB of DDR2 ram

Nvidia GeForce 8500GT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, i was thinking of getting either two HD7850 2G GDDR5 platinum Edition

Or two GTX760 CH-2GD5

I was also considering three HD7770 1G GDDR5 platinum Edition but i'm not sure if you can SLI three cards?

i Also would like to know the difference between these as they are the same price if possible:

HD7970 Platinum Edition

HD7970 3GB GDDR5 OC

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With all of these cards, what would best suit my current system? I am aware that my current CPU requires DDR2 ram which isn't very efficient nowadays. Can someone recommend me a basic CPU/Motherboard for the kind of graphic power i'll be installing (i'm not sure if those graphic cards are that good either)

Whatever happens i'll maximize ram in my new computer, thank you so much for your help it is desperately needed, and this post may seem a bit aggressive as in there wasn't much friendly conversation but that was not the intention, again thank you. .

I'd like to point out this will be used for gaming and Music production mainly. Also i currently have a 500W Power supply

Solution
I would go i5 4670k, 8GB new RAM, 1 or 2 GTX 770s. Cross-firing low end cars wont give you the same awesome 1 fast card will.

Well the very top end of my budget would allow me to get one GTX Titan-6GD5 OC if your saying that's the best way to go? i'm also fairly sure the main point of those CPU's is that they have integrated graphics, would that not be wasted? i could be wrong however. Thanks for the reply

Your current Q6600 would bottleneck pretty much anything past a single GTX 660Ti/7870, hence the CPU upgrade. a fourth gen i5-4670k as icraft has mentioned, coupled with a nice GTX770 or a 7970 and a nice mobo would be a good upgrade.

What is your upgrade budget?

As cheap as possible is my budget, i can stretch to pretty much anything if its needed but yer, i can get Graphics cards really cheap, but i'm not sure what CPU to pair them with

Depending on the make/model of that PSU and if you can salvage that hard drive, this would be a nice upgrade without a budget:

a 7950 is probably the best value card out there right now if your looking for value, but in the high performance range its the 7970.
