After several years of abuse, my old win XP desktop dies (and without having the chance to create a backup.... my fault!)... the hard drive is working, it's just the mother board that gave up. so, i had to buy a new computer, a laptop that runs win8... the win8 is a headache to use (but that isn't my main problem)... anyway, how do i retrieve files from my old hard drive (there are important family pictures and videos still in it...)? i already bought an enclosure for it, but i can't seem to transfer files from the "my documents" folders. i'm getting "access denied" pop-ups. how do i go about resolving this? Please help! :-(

Solution
Download Unetbootin and make a bootable usb stick with any Linux distro, Ubuntu is easy to use so that would be my choice for you.

Then, boot from that USB stick your computer, plug the old HDD and copy those files where you need them now. Linux will stomp all those Windows access permissions and then, your problem will be gone.

Good luck!
