After several years of abuse, my old win XP desktop dies (and without having the chance to create a backup.... my fault!)... the hard drive is working, it's just the mother board that gave up. so, i had to buy a new computer, a laptop that runs win8... the win8 is a headache to use (but that isn't my main problem)... anyway, how do i retrieve files from my old hard drive (there are important family pictures and videos still in it...)? i already bought an enclosure for it, but i can't seem to transfer files from the "my documents" folders. i'm getting "access denied" pop-ups. how do i go about resolving this? Please help! :-(

Permissions for those folders are tied to the original user account (yes....even the same 'username' is a different person in NTFS). You need to take or assign 'ownership'

Right click on that folder, select the Security tab.
Click "Advanced"
You should be able to take over ownership of those files.

Thanks for the advice. :) I was going to ask "how to take ownership", bignastyid has provided a useful link.
