Hey all,

Upgrading certain parts of my computer: cpu, motherboard, memory, cooling, power supply.

I'm mostly curious about the following -

Motherboard: I don't know how other than cost and reviews to measure the quality of motherboards. I've had a difficult time finding benchmark information. Is my current motherboard selection good or will a better one have a big effect on performance?

Cooling: Is water cooling necessary for the 6 core? Or will a regular heatsink be sufficient. Any other tips welcome here too.

Power supply: is 1000w excessive?

All advice appreciated,

Thanks!

Solution
Your ram is definitely fine.
If you want to be sure, you can always get a larger size psu. That way, even though you won't be using all of the watts, your psu won't be stressed out and you will have better efficiency.

Hi,

a) My job is a bit complicated to explain. I work simultaneously with large postgresql databases and (poory coded/inefficient) game applications, which together require lots of CPU power. I'm running into horrible performance issues with my current build (i5 quad core cpu usage maxes out instantly).

Can't figure out how to make a new build on pcpartpicker, so I'll provide the newegg links:

b) current build:

Motherboard: ASUS P8H77-V LGA: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131834
Memory: 2x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
cpu: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
ssd: Intel 520 Series Cherryville: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167113
gpu: 2x geforce 9800 gtx: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130348
misc: local bought my 700w power supply and stock heatsink & cooler

c) ~$1.5k, preferably. can do more.

d) don't intend to unless absolutely necessary

thanks

-There's no need for a new motherboard. That's a good motherboard if you don't plan to overclock. That being said, you can keep it and just upgrade your processor to an i7-3770, unless you want a 6-core i7-3930k.
-Isn't 16gb enough? Or is your ram usage getting maxed out fast?
-This is a great psu for it's price. Promo code ends soon, so be quick: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-ss750am
-If you get the i7-3770, it comes with a stock cpu cooler and there's no need to get an aftermarket one. However, if you get the i7-3930k, it does not come with a stock cpu cooler so you will need to buy one. For that purpose, the Hyper 212 EVO is a great option.

- Yeah I'm going with the i7-3930k.

- Hmm good point. I can definitely save money transferring my current RAM instead of buying new. Fwiw my memory usage while working is about 8gb. Would upgrading from DDR3 1600 to DDR3 1800+ make a noticeable performance difference?

- Are you certain 750w is enough power for a 6core cpu and two gpu's?

- Ok thanks for the suggestion. I was just worried, spending so much on a cpu, that I didn't want to fry it or anything.

Fwiw Canada charges insane brokerage fees on international shipping. If the part isn't offered from a .CA domain, it isn't worth buying. Newegg.ca, amazon.ca and directcanada.ca are I think the only shopping options.
