First off, do I even need the i7 version? What should I upgrade on the laptop to make it optimal for my needs?

I was wondering if this would be a good purchase for university:

Basically I will be using it for some coding, some gaming when I am on the go nothing hard core (Starcraft 2, league of legends, guild wars 2, mmorpgs), photo and minor video editing, and of course power point, excel, word.

Any other options out there under $1,000, that could beat this for the price?

Features I need:
-Intel: i5\i7 -dedicated graphics card -portable not huge under 16 inches

You don't need an i7, it wouldn't really be utilized (judging by your stated needs), and it will save you a pretty penny to go with an i5. Check out the Lenovo Y410p series with dedicated graphics: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y...

I've had less than favorable experience with Toshiba Satellite laptops, that's why I suggest Lenovo.

Yea levono makes really good laptops. My friend has the levono y500 and he loves it; It can play anything he throws at it maybe not on max though. The 410 would be a great choice for you

Yea I was just looking over them. The, http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y... Looks like it might be the best fit overall? I just say that because of the 1920x1080 display, or should I just go with the comparable 410 model? I haven't ever really thought of one of these!

Basically i don't want to overspend, if the 410 will give me about the same as the 500 then I see no reason to go up.

Yeah screen size and resolution is the main difference between the two at that point. If you favor a bigger screen, go with Y510p models! Otherwise, pay less ;)

Cheers
