I've got an older Dell Latitude D630 that all of a sudden the video driver crapped out on me. I've got Win 7 pro installed and think it was the driver that Windows installed when I put Win 7 on it. I have the latest driver downloaded from Dell's website, but it's xp/Win 2000. Nothing I've done has fixed it, removed it from the device manager and rebooted, but nothing. Anyone have any suggestions short of reinstalling?

have you tried to install the driver through the device manager? in run type device manager and hit enter. this will bring you right to device manager.

also many times windows will download the driver for video through windows update. have you checked to see if you have any updates?

Yep, tried updating through device manager, no windows updates either. I'm at a loss. Had another laptop recently that had the video driver crap out on me too. It was the same model as this one, only has XP on it. I was able to reinstall the drivers for it and everything is fine.

Downloading now. I've always went to Dell's website and was always told to go there, not nVidia. Will let you know.

Well, the driver is updated, but still nothing on the screen and can not change the resolution. I have LogMeIn installed on the laptop, so I'm able to see the laptop. Kind of at a loss here...

When you say nothing on the screen, are you using an external monitor to view your info? If the machine boots and you can see your desktop on an external monitor but cannot use the laptop screen, it is not a driver issue - more likely the laptop display has an issue.

Disconnect the external monitor, reboot and try shining a flashlight at the screen. If you can see a very dim "desktop", that is an indication that the ccfl and/or inverter has gone bad. If you cannot see anything on the screen, but there is a dim glow at the bottom of the screen (without using flashlight), that is an indication that the lcd panel has died.

Replacement of the screen or inverter is not difficult, and there are several sources on the web for parts. I just replaced the screen/inverter on my 830 - cost me about $60 for a screen plus inverter off ebay. Took about 20 minutes.

I am not using an external monitor. LogMeIn is a remote assistance program that allows you to remote into a PC from any internet connection. The machine does boot, but nothing is on the screen. I do see the screen light up, so the display I do believe is working.
