ATI Rage 128 VR with Dell Dimension 3000

I bought an ATI Rage 128 VR new off eBay, and when I plopped it in my PCI slot, turned on the computer, it booted up, but nothing on the screen. The light turns green, no beeps, everything a normal startup haves but without the screen. I plugged the VGA cable in the Card, where the slot is, and same thing. It is on the top most slot, and tried all the other slots. Same thing. My buddy told me to install the drivers first. Since my DVD drive wasn't working, I copied the drivers off the DVD drive to the USB on another computer, and plugged it in. When I ran the setup, it couldn't detect the card. Everything is stock, just the new video card.

RAM: 1.25 GB
PSU: 200W Stock PSU
HDD: Western Digital 40 GB
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit

Help would be appreciated

it wont work driver are up to xp only search on ati you will see .

I think Vista will just treat it as a VGA card. Even then I don't see why you would use that card over the integrated graphics Unless you really wanna just run Quake 2 or something

. Your computer is probably trying to use the onboard GPU. Make sure you set PCI as the first video adapter to look for, or just disable onboard graphics. Of course if the card is just dead you may have to reset the BIOS to get your onboard GPU back

So your saying that the graphics card will make no difference in performance? The highest resolution it is on is 1440 by 900 which is stressing the CPU. Also, I installed it, before I did, I went into the BIOS and disabled the on board, exited and installed it. Nothing happened. Same thing, moniter not turning on.

The ATI Rage 128 VR is an ancient and obsolete graphics card. It only supports DirectX 6. Win Vista/7/8 requires a DirectX 9 graphics card or better.

The ATI Radeon 9500 from 2002 is the oldest card you can use since it fully supports DX 9. Don't get the Radeon 9250 which only partially supports DX 9.

The Rage 128 VR was likely release some time around 1995.

What I mean is that the Rage 128 is likely worse than your onboard GPU (even if it's a VIA Savage S4) and might only beat it in color quality or some specific old games, maybe, if your running it under XP. Anyway since what I now think you want is to just run Areo in Vista you should get a Radeon 5450 or at least a 3450

I only have a 200W power supply, but I need a 400W power supply. If you can find a PSU that is 400W and uses molex only, and supports the big fat wide connectors for the HDD and the DVD drive that are NOT sata, I can give you a cookie.

The 5450 doesn't need much power. It should be fine just running off the PCI slot. It doesn't look like you need a molex connector or anything for the specific card I pointed out. After all the 5450 is rated for just 19.1W TDP.

Too bad those dells don't have an AGP slot or it would be worth upgrading your PSU to support a decent older video card like a 4650, 3850 or even nVidia 7900. All of course you would have to get on ebay
