Hello all,

So here is a little back story: I bought an Alienware X51 about a year ago and i honestly have loved it ever since. I upgraded it too, with an i5-3570k. But i think it is time for me to move on towards a more "mature" build, one that i will build myself. I will still be keeping the X51 though and giving it to my friend. But i will have to swap the motherboard out, which has led to this very confusing (for me) and difficult challenge i hope to solve in this thread.

Build

So as most of you probably know, the Alienware x51 is an OEM computer. So I also got an OEM version of windows (i think :??:). In my new build i will be using a different case, motherboard, CPU heatsink, and power supply. These are the parts i should be using if all goes well:

- Corsair carbide 400R Mid tower case
-ASRock z75 pro3 LGA 1155 ATX motherboard
-Western Digital 7200RPM 1TB caviar black HDD
-G-Skill Sniper 1333 Mhz 8GB RAM
- Rosewill green series 630 Watt PSU
-Intel i5-3570k
-EVGA GeForce GTX 650Ti SSC 2GB Version GPU

Problem

OKAY. Now, i know how to build a PC myself as i have had some experience in the past, so not the issue here. This is the REAL problem. I bought my X51 with windows 7 Home Premium Pre-Installed, and also know the product key. Since i am performing a motherboard swap, i will just save the extra work to do a clean install of windows 7. But i do NOT have a windows 7 install disc (i am fairly certain the recovery disc or repair disc does not perform a clean install on a different motherboard, please correct me if wrong) that came with my x51, so i do not know how to transfer windows 7 to my new motherboard without buying an entirely new copy since it was previously used on an OEM computer.

Basically, I just want to know how to install OEM windows 7 on a new motherboard without a disc or buying a new copy.

It seems a little more complicated though, if even possible.^

Thanks for the help, all is welcome.

Windows 7 OEM is not supposed to work when someone switches out the motherboard as SR-71 Blackbird will say (unless the mobo is the same make and model as the original). I somehow did it without doing anything special. I believe I just plugged my HDD into the SATA port, powered it on, installed mobo drivers and it worked perfect for the most part. I didn't even reinstall the OS which is probably why I didn't run into any problems (for the most part).

You shouldn't need to reinstall but you can get a legit and legal image from here for free: http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/604187-legal-download-digitalriver-windows-7-sp1-13-languages.html

From what I've read, using the same OEM license in either retail or OEM version of Win 7 installation should work, but that was without changing the motherboard so Idk what will happen. If the installation doesn't seem to work, you can try calling the Microsoft support number to try and get it activated. Otherwise, you'll have to find an alternative option.

and FYI, the installation is placed on the hard drive. The operating system just reads what the original motherboard is and is "tied to it". ;)
