I have a HP laptop with AMD A8M-4500M APU with 7640G integrated graphics and a 7670M dedicated to work in dual graphics mode......I wanted to know that if I have enabled dual graphics and then in the switchable graphics option if I select power saving mode ........... does dual graphics gets disabled.........I know it does not because the dual graphics logo comes up at top right hand corner while playing dirt 3..........then what does selecting power saving or high performance actually does...............??

hope yall understand what I am trying to ask....

Solution
Sorry for late answers, I can't use my PC right now so my answers might not be accurate.

(Q)Did you use the 'benchmark option or did you just play while checking the fps?
(Q)Did you close all other programs or were apps updating etc.?
(Q)Is 1280x720 your native resolution?
(Q)Can you delete the Dirt 3 preset in CCC? Maybe that turns on automatically when using the 7670, which might decrease performance, it might force AA, even if you have it off in-game.
(Q)If you deleted the preset, does it come back when you run Dirt 3 again?

Try to set the graphics settings to 'high' even if the fps is not playable. Just for testing. Post results.

SETTINGS SHOULD BE:
TEST 1:
Switchable graphics
High preset
Native resolution
No AA
No V-sync...

I don't think it does disable the 7670M. I'm pretty sure as long as you have it enabled, it will stay on.

Try running Dirt 3 with power saving mode and with high performance mode.
Show the results (FPS) here.

[ok nuck I will give it a go and post it here....,......

I think it would prove it......if the logo comes up....it must be enabled , otherwise not..................

one more thing is that when I disable dual graphics from the AMD vision engine control centre the game performs good with no stuttering but the time I enable it a lot of stuttering occurs.......I don't know why.... I have windows 8 64 bit....13.4 version of catalyst....the latest CAP......I know dual graphics is quite famous for this stuttering issue .... but a solution would be good . above observations were made with power supply on and switchable graphics in high performance mode

got the results:-
TEST 1----dual graphics enabled, AA off,1280x720,v-sync--off, all settings at medium or low, high performance mode in switchable graphics.................Average fps=33.29,minimum fps=23.51,dual graphics logo visible

TEST 2----dual graphics disabled, AA off,1280x720,v-sync--off, all settings at medium or low, high performance mode in switchable graphics.................Average fps=42.13,minimum fps=29.02, dual graphics logo NOT visible

TEST 3----dual graphics enabled, AA off,1280x720,v-sync--off, all settings at medium or low, power saving mode in switchable graphics.................Average fps=41.33,minimum fps=29.02.dual graphics logo NOT visible

I think that the dual graphics got disabled in the power saving mode........but really the fps drops so much with enabled dual graphics...................even there is a pre-existing amd profile for dirt 3 in CCC .....because when I go to change something there it says so............so I didn't overwrite it....................any solution guys?

Setting on high graphics should make the 7670M work harder.

Power savings mode might actually turn off your 7670m but I still don't think so since all I know what power savings mode does is make your brightness lower, make your laptop go to sleep or turn off the display when idle less longer..

What I mean is:
Power saving mode off:
Turn off display: after 20 minutes idle
Brightness level: 90%
Turn off wireless connection: Never

Power saving mode on:
Turn off display: after 5 minutes idle
Brightness level: 20%
Turn off wireless connection: 10 minutes after display off

I have a PC now so I can't really check those settings also, I last used a Windows laptop in about 4 months ago.. but I can remember that you can customise them.

hey Nuck , thanks for the replies......I have performed the tests with the specifications you gave, but first let me answer some of your questions
1 I tested the fps with the in-game benchmark test

2 I have windows 8-64 bit and from advanced settings I had turned off all the animations and effects etc.

3 No, 1280x720 is not my native resolution. But I will post the next set of results with 1366x768 as the in-
game resolution(1366x768 is my native resolution)

4 now, about the dirt 3 present, the ccc can be used to save specific application profiles for different 3d applications, but when I try to make one for dirt 3 ,it prompts that a CAP already exists for this application, ...and asks me if I want to override it.........till now I did not override the settings..............................................................................................
.............for the next test I will post the results with the settings I made for dirt 3 by overriding, from CCC i.e. aa off, surface format optimization off, tessellation :amd optimized......at he end there is a setting called crossfirex mode,
which has the following options:-
a default
b afr friendly
c optimized 1x1
d amd predefined profile.......this has an option for dirt3.exe.......but if I select it the CCC gives an error message and stops working saying host application has stopped working.....so this time I have kept it in the default mode and saved a profile for dirt 3
I will post the results with this application profile soon.........and there is nowhere in CCC that the pre-existing profiles are shown ,so they cant be deleted I think ...only overridden.
apologies for making this so long

one more thing.......the power saving mode I was talking about wa not the windows power options one....it was the option included in the switchable graphics option from ati for each application where you can select either high performance mode or power saving mode for each application...........

Oh, lol. I thought you were talking about the Windows power saving mode...

What other games do you have?

considering other games...........since this laptop is new.....I have only dirt 3 installed here............but I am thinking of installing battlefield 3 ........... next
so I think I the dual graphics matter is now clear because of the following I observed last night.........
I downloaded amd system monitor.....it shows the usage of 7640g and 7670m in different bars and graphs......the readings are
real time......so I kept this software runni ng on the desktop and opened dirt 3 in window mode
with dual gr. enabled-------both 7640g and 7670m were showing readings
with dual gr. disabled------ 1 in high performance mode-------only the 7670m showed readings (67% to 98%.) and mostly
0% for the 7640g (sometimes it went to 2% or 3%)
------- 2 in power saving mode------------only the 7640g showed readings (97% or 98%) with absolutely
no activity for the 7670m
but the problem of poor performance still exists when dual graphics is enabled
Test 1------dual gr. disabled;1366x768;2x MSAA; high preset ; high performance mode; average fps: 45.51;min.:37.07
Test 2-----dual gr. enabled;1366x768;2xMSAA;high preset; average fps:42.12;min.fps:31.48 (with frequent stuttering)
( your suggestion of running in native resolution and high preset....with dual gr. enabled worked fps has considerably increased)
I performed the above tests with a application profile I made for dirt 3 in the catalyst control centre for the high performance mode.(the profiles can be made either for high performance or the power saving mode).......so any suggestions????really required.............it feels bad that two gpu working together degrades gameplay!!!!!!!

ok chuck,,,,,,,,,,,i did some research on the dual graphics topic and found that most of the people using the crossfire or the dual graphics solution based on crossfire sre facing this micro-stuttering issue......AMD brought out a solution for this called frame pacing in their 13.8 beta drivers , but only for crossfire users with two discrete GPUs ............ not for dual graphics users ...which have an APU working with a discrete gpu...............hope they would role out a driver for us dual graphic users soon.........

They probably would do that in the final 13.8 driver but if they don't.. You'd have to contact HP or AMD..

I think you get low performance because you have a low resolution (so the GPU, 7670m, would work less harder to save power). If you have an HDMI cable, try connecting it to your TV.

Plus, don't get BF3 (because it's 2 years old already, duh) , get CS:GO or BF4 instead.

Counter Strike series are the best FPS games of all time.

you just wrote the most justified and the coolest thing ever.......counter strike is the best..............and I specially mean CS1.6..................I live in a hostel dorm. and really he excitement and thrill of a 5 vs. 5 LAN game is just awesome..............
even have a team called FAU (fraggers association limited)..............we visit other colleges for LAN tournaments ...host them sometimes.....the CS1.6 community is really thriving.........
still have not switched to GO cause my team can't even think of abandoning CS....
what r ur thoughts chuck?.....are u into 1.6.

GO's graphics are nice but is a lot easier than other CS's since it has lower recoil.
My friends and I used to play CS 1.6 all the time back in 2009.
I stopped playing CS and then came back, my friends don't play CS 1.6 anymore, they moved to CSS.
Now I play CSS.

CS:GO is not bad though..

we still prefer to play CS1.6 because where we live ....... and since the tournaments are organised by different college students in their institute's computer labs....the systems are not so good to play the graphics
of CSS and CS:GO........so we stick to 1.6......but on we are thinking to swap............because every team on the global level switched to CS:1.6.........(don't know about navi though....last time I checked they were still on 1.6.........going to check on it)...............it will take some time here to change things
