Of my 4 Western Digital My Book Essential external drives , 2 of them now , within days of each other have just suddenly stopped working ! The lights on them go on , and I can hear the faint hum they always make , but they do not show up in "computer " where drives are usually shown . nor in "device manager " . They weren't dropped or otherwise abused ever , I tested all my usb ports ...all good . I am running Windows 7 , on a 2 year old Acer Aspire . No other problems with this machine . When the 1st one quit , I thought maybe it was just worn out or took a crap for some reason , but now 2 ? Sure hoping there is some fix someone might know of . Any help will be greatly appreciated !!!!!!!!!!!!! PS..... all drivers up to date .

you might need to crack the case open and plug the hdd directly into the pc could be the usb controller on the case gone.

Mauller07 ....thanks alot for the info . But , is that usb controller , or connecter ? So this means the plug is bad ? Anyway I'll open up the lesser of the drives 1st and see what I can see . Thanks alot for the quick reply . Alot of my world is on these drives and I hope they are not lost !

The USB controller in the case converts the sata connection and storage controller for the hdd in the external drive into a USB device.

I have had this happen myself, the hdd itself is ok but the controller in the external he'd caddie has died.
