Phenom II X4 955 + GTX 760 = Bad Match?

Hello, I used to have a GTX 470 that I believe is now dead (started flickering while gaming once and then gave me "video hardware error" bluescreen). While now searching for a replacement I first looked at the GTX 660 and 660Ti's, but then finally the 760, more specifically from ASUS.

I thought I had this thought out until I started thinking about bottlenecking and realizing that will probably happen to me. I have a Phenom II X4 955 at 3.2GHz, not OC'd and stock cooler. The only thing I'm interested in are racing games, and I would really like to play New Car Game and The Crew at 1680x1050 which is my screen resolution. How bad do you think it would be for me? Would I be better off just starting over?

ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard
2x2GB Kingston HyperX DDR3
Corsair HX750W PSU

Hey. Yeah, some people don't like changing Makes, but I'm just an AMD guy. The 660ti seems to be a pretty solid choice for Nvidia card, for roughly around the same price as the 7870 Tahiti. Just a link to let you know roughly what you're looking for.

I'd also recommend getting the ASUS version of the card, fail that the MSI version.

Some people on here give really vague answers sometimes. Anyhow, I'd probably recommend going for the AMD 7870.
Its a decent price, and overly capable of playing those games with your CPU, as well as being future proof for quite a while.
Are you UK or US? I'm just asking so i can post you the correct link to the card. And as far as the bottlenecking goes with the 760, it will be fairly significant, but the 7870 is just about the max you can get before major bottlenecking.

Thank you very much, that's very helpful! :) I'm in Sweden actually, so finding a link may be difficult for you but I can probably find it myself if you had something very specific in mind. I've never actually used AMD cards before, always stuck with Nvidia. What would be their equivalent and would it be a bad idea going for it over the AMD for some reason?

That's actually one of the cards I've been looking at very closely, especially the ASUS version. So you're saying that it will both work with my current system and I won't have to worry about bottlenecking? If so then that's golden. :)

Yeah, I will sure mark one of your answers as a solution, still pretty new to how this forum works even though I've visited quite a lot before I registered.

Yep, that card will do wonders with your setup. If there is any bottlenecking it won't be very significant, and not even worth thinking about. And if bottlenecking does matter that much to you the new Piledriver AM3+ cpu's are becoming quite cheap now too. Just make sure you do the standard new graphics card procedure and check the size of the card against your case capabilities. The amount of people that have bought large cards to fit in their too small cases is mind crushing.

even though 760 will bottleneck the cpu, it won't be that much, plus if you get 7870 rathen than 760 you will get less performance from a gpu obviously, so it's all depending on the price.

The 7870 will bottleneck a lot. Hope you haven't bought it. You;d be better of buying something older or getting a new PC. My GTX 660 (which is a 7870 equivalent) has no difference on BF3 low to ultra FPS wise. I tried my friends 7850 and that wasn't much better either. Abut 30 FPS

I have a Phenom II X4 955BE @ 3.6ghz and dual Radeon 270X's in Crossfire @ 1200mhz core & 1575mhz memory and I've yet to experience a single bottleneck. My scores in 3DMark Fire Strike and gaming benchmarks (Sleeping Dogs built-in benchmark, Nexuiz built-in benchmark) are right in line with other Crossfired 270X setups with stronger processors, 5fps +/- difference max.

TL;DR No, a Phenom II X4 955BE will not bottleneck a GTX 760 :)

I upgraded my GPU from a 460 gtx 768 to a EVGA 760 GTX SC 2GB. I have a Phenom 2 955 BE @3.8 GHZ. Let me tell you the difference is HUGE. I can max out FC3 and Skyrim at a solid 60fps. I also can play shadow warrior at max other than mirrors and get mostly 60fps... short answer YES... By the way I am running 4gb DDR2 ram @1066. I can't tell you how many posts I got from people saying "OMG your cpu will bottleneck that card and you wouldn't notice a difference." I laugh in their faces now.

Seems I didn't search hard enough. This is what I want to get, and now it is a definite I will be getting it. I also have a 955 x4 BE and want a 760. Alot of people are saying "bottleneck!" but some mates and a few others here are saying it'll be fine. And anyway, if it is I can always just use it in a newer system anyways...
