Hi all,

I love to play an online game called RuneScape... (brilliant game)

I was wondering what determines the speed of the game (FPS) would it be more dependent on the internet connection/speed or the quality of the graphics card?

please remember it is a web-based/online game...

Any help is most welcome!!

For your original question:
For Runescape specificaly..
Afaik it is still a browser-based Java game and afaik it doesn't (and can't) utilize a Graphic acceleration on your GPU.
So the FPS of the game is determined by a raw speed of your CPU.

But FPS (frames per second) only applies to how fast the >game graphic< is shown to you.
Even with good FPS the game can still seem 'jerky' because of slow internet connection.
This is a different kind of 'jerkiness' though - what pleople call 'lag'. You know, when you can look around in the game smoothly, but other players keep popping around you instead of being seen walking around or game interface updates slowly etc.

(For other MMO games that are more like normal 3D game the same rules apply...

The FPS of online games is directly proportional to the competence of the people developing them. Many MMO games chug along compared to their conventional counterparts because they're not very well designed.

Lamens terms please?
your post confused the hell out of me...

Games like Runescape run like shit because they're coded like shit. Network speed is quite important to MMORPGs, but most competent programmers can work around this. However, in my experience, most MMOs are not programmed by competent programmers.

It's hard to say what component is responsible for bottlenecks found in MMORPGs because each one is different.

Oh right... the reason I am asking is because I have been playing this game on two laptops,
(while my first build is in progress which i hope to have complete by approx February 2014)

On the 1st laptop (which has a lot better specs) runs this game very quickly with almost not lag
the 2nd laptop I play on it about 3years old, and it runs really slow but my internet connection for my 2nd laptop is very slow also as I use my phone's internet...

It is hard to say if it the internet or Graphic Processor... oh well, i will have to bare with it, many thanks for your help

(For other MMO games that are more like normal 3D game the same rules apply as to any 3D game. Ie. you need both good CPU, GPU and lots of memory. A good net connection helps too, but it doesn't actually need to be super fast. Usually a good 'ping' values for connection are more important to play lag free.)
