Hello, I built my PC in december of 2010, here are the specs

- MOBO Crosshair IV Formula
- CPU AMD 1090T
- RAM 6gb Ripjaw 1600
- GPU Radeon HD 5970
- PSU XFX 850w

The fan on my stock heatsink was becoming unreliable. It was not scaling up when needed and therefore the CPU was overheating. I bought the H80i and put it in but after that no post/red static CPU LED.

I checked the 8plug, 24plug and even removed and reseated the CPU. When i pulled the old heatsink however the CPU came with it. The pins were not bent. Im wondering, does this sound like the CPU socket might be ruined? What do you think it is? Thanks!

Hate to scare ya but last month had 2 systems come in ..... both w/ dead MoBos and both w/ Hyper 212's

In one case user had either overtightened mounting hardware or there was a burr on underside....was cut into MoBo which damaged underlying circuit. In 2nd one we dunno what happened.

thanks for the responses guys. I dont have another CPU or MOBO to test it with. I used the thermal past that came with the h80i. the second time after cleaning it off i used Arctic Silver 5. No pins broke, the heatshield appears to be in order.

I did finger tighten the mount tight. I guess there is a chance i ruined the mobo or the CPU or both?

If you were able to remove the CPU while the retaining bar was still engaged, it is very possible that your socket is ruined. There should be enough grip from the socket when the retaining bar is engaged to prevent that from happening.

I assume you properly lifted the retaining bar when reinstalling the CPU and ensured the CPU was positioned correctly?

hmm, so it sounds like it is probably the socket that is ruined and not the chip? I wish i had known the turn and twist method was required. I've never removed a heatsink that has been used for so long :/.

I was thinking of having them both tested by a local shop if its cheap enough. Do you think its worth it or is the Mobo surely toast?
