Core clock jumping up and down on idle

Hello, I hope someone here can help me. I have a Geforce 780m, I installed afterburner to monitor the gpu, but I notice something strange when my computer is idle. When I close everything and leave the desktop by itself with the afterburner monitor, the core clock and memory clock go up and down fast. The core clock from 770 to 132 MHz and memory clock from 2397 to 324 MHz.
I don't think that's normal behaviour, I have tried many thing and tried to find solutions without avail.

Clocks dynamically adjust to the workload, and your GPU is no exception.

For instance, even if the computer is left idle, Windows constantly redraws the active windows. This causes the core/memory clock to spike up for a small interval of time. When the task is complete, the clocks drop back down to save power.

So its supposed to jump up and down that fast when everything is closed? I could find anywhere if that was supposed to be a normal thing, My laptop does have 2 GPUs, so what you said makes sense. I have noticed when Im on firefox, it stabilizes and runs low. Thank you so much, I feel pretty dumb now, but I cant learn if I dont ask.
PS cool name

Sorry to bump and old post but @u_gonna_squeal_b4_we_cookya you are mistaken. It is normal to run at a low clock while idle, but what tplissken is describing is not normal. I am having this problem atm and as well as core and clock spiking there is also voltage spikes. This problem is most likely due to faulty or dodgy power supply/ connectors and if defiantly not normal because it also causes higher temps at idle, it shouldn't affect performance but is very annoying when you want to just browse the web/ do simple tasks.

You know, you are right, Im sorry I didnt post when I found the solution to my specific issue.
I set my NVidia GPU as the preferred graphics processor in the global settings of the Nvidia Control Panel.
I no longer get any spikes on the nvidia card monitor. I assume because the 2 graphics cards are not fighting over which one is supposed to run the desktop or my browser.

I opened the vidia control panel at the notification area. I clicked on Manage 3d settings, clicked the left tab named Gloabal Settings, and under Preferred Graphics Processor I selected the High Performance Nvidia Proc.

Yeah this just led me to another common problem where this setting doesn't show up. The problems just don't end for me. I disable integrated gfx in bios, nothing, may have to re install my nvidia drivers for the millionth time :p.

Anyway, thanks for the solution. Hopefully it works for me when I find it, if not must be PSU.
