Hello,
My company give me a budget for making a build for a workstation.
Mostly, i'm gonna use software like 3dsmax, after effects, premiere, combustion, etc, so, a lot of heavy manipulations with high-res files.

The budget is 1 900 $ approximatly, and here is what i have done :

Motherboard :
Asus P9X79 Pro

Proc :
Intel Core i7 3820 (3.6 Ghz)

Hard Drive :
Ssd Crucial M500, 120 Go, Sata Iii
Disque dur Western Digital Caviar Black, 1 To

RAM :
[Ddr3 Crucial Ballistix Sport Xt, 8 Go, Pc3-14900, Cas 10] X 4

Graphic Card :
Gigabyte GeForce Gtx 770 Oc, 2 Go

Cooler :
Corsair H80i Hydro Series

Power :
Corsair Gs800 Edition 2013, 800W

Box:
Corsair Carbide 200R

I have hesitate a lot about the graphic card, read a lot of thing about nvidia Quadro, and finally, i've choose the GTX770 oc.

What do you think of the build ? Can it be improved without overkilling the price ?

Well, if I were you, I'd dish out just a little bit more on the CPU (ie go with the newer Ivy Bridge E 4930K instead of the 3820) and the GPU (maybe a GTX780?)
Next to that, the PSU is kinda "too much" for what is in the box, I'd rather go for a 650Watt or something. It's not like you're going to be using SLI instantly?

About your doubts with the GPU: you will really notice a difference in rendering time between the Quadro family and the GTX770, if you have to render a longer video.
A GTX780 would get quite close, without the price premium of those high end cards.

And will you be rendering from/to the HDD or will you make sure to place them all on your SSD? If you would use the HDD more for archiving, it might be a good value over budget choice to pick a bigger (but slower) drive than this WD Black drive, IE a WD Green EZRX series drive (which gets quite high read/write speeds for a green drive) and a little bit bigger SSD. A 120GB SSD will get filled up quickly, if you've got a couple of editing programs installed on it.

I hope this helped, and that other would correct me if there would be something wrong in here!

Hi Psycho202,

You're true about the CPU and GPU, but the ones i have found are a bit too pricy (even if put less money in other components, i'm still a little too costly).
Another people advice me to try the intel i7 4770K (and change the motherboard for one with the good socket), i think i'll give a try to this.

650 watts is good enough, you're right too. I was a bit afraid of put some new hardware (like another hdd, maybe a dvd-rom, stuff like this) and don't have enough power.
I had some issues with power supply in the past :p

For the GPU, curiously, rendering longer video is not the big priority actually. We use network rendering for final pass, and with our short movies, most of time, 4/5 hours (maximum) in the night is enough.

For rendering, it will be from/to the HDD, so i suppose keeping a good writing speed is important here (for pure storage, we use a NAS server or external disk)
And yep, a bigger SSD is a good option :)

Thanks for your advice !
